BBI II-D #02 No “Preexistence” in the Synoptic Gospels?
Biblical Unitarians validate their unbelief regarding the Son’s pre-human existence primarily on an argument from silence. They claim that the Synoptic Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke) say absolutely nothing about preexistence. They then attempt to filter all of the preexistence language in John’s Gospel through a fabricated “Jewish” philosophical paradigm so that none of it is taken literally.
However, they miss one of the most important conversations Jesus had with the Jewish scholars concerning Psalm 110:1 and whose “Son” the Messiah actually is. This conversation is found in all three synoptic Gospels. The Jewish scholars were ‘Unitarians,’ believing exclusively in a human “messiah” from the seed of David. They did not understand the meaning of the title “Son of God,” or the meaning of God “begetting” a Son. They could not answer Jesus’ riddle which requires that the Messiah is superior to David because He preceded David and was the source of David’s own kingdom. This lesson shows some of the deceptive machinations ‘Biblical’ Unitarians use in order to justify their unbelief.
